Swimming Cavaliers Show Out Against Region Foes

By Jase Peeler

The Cavaliers squared off against region rivals Hillcrest and Riverside Thursday night at Converse College. The Boys team defeated last year's state runner-up, Riverside, by a score of 166 to 99 and beat Hillcrest 190 to 69. The girls defeated Hillcrest by a score of 161 to 90 and fell short to Riverside 106 to 162. The Cavaliers combined beat Riverside 272 to 261 and Hillcrest 351 to 159.

Since it was a triple dual meet, individual scores were not calculated.

The girls team had a total of 6 automatic state cuts earned, with three of them new and another an improvement on an already-set time. Junior Alaina Smith achieved an automatic time in the 50 freestyle, her second automatic time of the year. The girls 200 and 400 freestyle relays achieved automatic cuts, accounting for their first automatic relay cuts of the year. The girls also achieved two consideration times. The girls now have an automatic cut in every event. The boys team had 8 automatic cuts, with two of them new relays and another two improvements on previously-set times. The boys had 13 consideration times, with 4 new relays (two of which were in the same event), two new individual (both by Caleb Bailey), and 4 improvements. Senior Andrew Johns also would have set the school record in the 200 free during the meet, had it not been already broken by Jack Parker earlier in the year.

The Cavaliers will travel to the Middle Tyger YMCA at 10:00 AM Saturday for the big Region Meet.
